The No. 8 BYU Cougars defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 27‑20, but the decisive touchdown came from a controversial replay decision.
Early in the first quarter, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier fumbled on a goal‑line sneak and running back Sione Moa recovered the ball in the end zone, but officials initially ruled the play dead. Big 12 replay officials later reversed the call and awarded the score, a decision later admitted to be incorrect.
The conference said the ball had been dead before the recovery, so the correct outcome should have been a third‑and‑goal from the two‑yard line. This marks the third consecutive week the league has issued an erroneous call that impacted a game’s result.
