The New Mexico Lobos football program has achieved a historic milestone by earning its first-ever ranking in the AP Top 25 Poll, landing at No. 22 after a 7-1 season under head coach Jason Eck.
The Lobos, who have played for nearly a century without a national ranking, have built a strong case for a Group of Six playoff berth by topping the Mountain West Conference standings. Their lone loss came on the road against Oklahoma, but victories over teams like San Jose State have solidified their standing above SEC programs like Florida and South Carolina.
With only one game left—against Nevada—the Lobos face a critical test to secure a postseason bid, especially after Nevada’s recent 27-0 shutout loss to No. 5 UCLA.
Their remaining opponents outside the Wolfpack boast a combined record of 16-8, adding to the pressure as New Mexico looks to finish the season strong. The Lobos’ next challenge arrives Friday night, with kickoff set for 9 p.m.
ET on CBS Sports Network.
