India secured a comfortable five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening match of their ODI series, which was shortened by rain and played in Auckland on Wednesday. Bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar dismantled the opposition lineup by taking four and three wickets respectively, keeping the total down to 185 runs in 40.2 overs despite brief resistance from Tim Seifert, Glenn Phillips, and Daryl Mitchell.
In response, India lost Rohit Sharma early, but a solid 113-run partnership between captain Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli stabilized the chase. Kohli contributed a stellar fifty, helping the team easily surpass a revised target of 143 runs in just 22.3 overs.
