India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has pinpointed the team’s untested bowling lineup as its biggest hurdle ahead of the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting November 4. With key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya sidelined, India will rely on a group of young pacers—led by Mohammed Siraj (51 ODIs) and Arshdeep Singh (18 ODIs)—whose combined experience totals just 97 ODIs, making it the least-experienced attack in the team’s history.
Gambhir emphasized that success in this series will hinge on their performance, noting that even with a seasoned batting lineup, overseas victories in limited-overs cricket often depend on the bowlers’ ability to deliver under pressure. The challenge is further complicated by India’s dual focus on preparing for both the ODI series and the upcoming two-Test matches later in the tour, requiring a delicate balance of workload and adaptation.
Gambhir also highlighted Abhishek Sharma’s recent progress against New Zealand off-spinner Michael Bracewell, praising the opener’s improved technique after struggling earlier in the five-match T20I series. The coach, a former spin specialist himself, credited Sharma’s tactical adjustments during extended net sessions as a turning point, stressing that refining skills against different bowling styles gives players a competitive edge.
While Sharma’s development offers a bright spot, Gambhir’s focus remains on the bowling unit, where even modest breakthroughs could prove decisive in a series where experience is at a premium.
