The football world mourned the loss of Jesus de Miguel, a 30-year-old forward for Tenerife in Spain’s second division, who died after suffering severe injuries during a match on Monday. The incident occurred when de Miguel collided with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, leaving him motionless on the pitch before medical staff rushed to his aid.
The game was abandoned, and Owono was sent off for the challenge. De Miguel was taken to hospital but passed away at 07:00 GMT on Tuesday, prompting an outpouring of grief from the football community.
His funeral was held in Navahermosa, Toledo, with team-mates carrying his casket to the service at San Miguel Arcangel church. Prominent figures, including current Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, and former Real and Spain coach Jose Antonio Camacho, attended the ceremony.
The family expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support, calling de Miguel’s impact on others ‘a void that is impossible to fill.’
