Man Utd's £1bn rebuild faces toughest test

With limited fixtures enabling rare lineup alterations, United kept regulars energized, but a looming calendar of up to 67 games presents a severe examination starting with the Manchester derby directly after a 4-0 European victory over Sabah. The club will be keen to avoid repeating their 2024/25 campaign, when balancing continental commitments contributed to a 15th-place league finish.

While Carrick has publicly welcomed the added involvement for a squad largely familiar with European demands, squad composition concerns persist despite an outlay exceeding £1bn since 2022 and a league-leading net expenditure of £769.5m. Following a £163m summer window that prioritized midfielders Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos, and Youri Tielemans—a year after recruiting attackers Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha—the defensive unit appears underfunded.

Just 19 percent of the £1bn total has addressed the backline, representing the third-lowest share in the English top flight ahead of only Everton and Liverpool, leaving significant depth deficiencies compared to the 42 percent directed into the forward line.
