J. McCarthy.
Following a collegiate national title run at the University of Michigan, McCarthy engaged in an extended summer duel for Minnesota's primary quarterback position. The starting nod eventually went to veteran Kyler Murray, whom the club picked up during the 2026 offseason following his release by Arizona on the heels of a season-shortening 2025 foot injury.
During exhibition play, McCarthy tallied 112 yards on 9-of-17 passing while avoiding turnovers and failing to record a score across two preseason outings.
With Murray now sidelined in concussion protocol for the upcoming Week 2 showdown against the Chicago Bears, the Vikings are turning to Carson Wentz as their replacement starter under head coach Kevin O'Connell. McCarthy will serve as the backup quarterback on Sunday, leaving him in line for action if Wentz cannot finish the contest.
