End of an era: Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket after 14 years

The Big Show has taken his final bow in Australian colours.

Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending a remarkable 14-year journey with Australia that featured World Cup triumphs, record-breaking performances and some of the most extraordinary innings in modern cricket.

The 38-year-old confirmed the decision on The Final Word podcast, bringing an end to his international career across all three formats.

Maxwell had already retired from ODI cricket in June 2025. His latest announcement means he will no longer represent Australia in T20 internationals either.

THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE BIG SHOW

Maxwell finishes his international career with an impressive record:

- Tests: 7 matches, 339 runs

- ODIs: 149 matches, 3,990 runs

- T20Is: 130 matches, 2,897 runs

- International centuries: 10

- International wickets: 136

His T20I strike rate of 154.42 reflected the fearless approach that made him one of the most dangerous middle-order batters in world cricket.

He also shares the record for the most T20I centuries, with five, alongside India's Rohit Sharma.

THE INNINGS THAT DEFINED A LEGACY

If one performance captures Maxwell's extraordinary ability, it is his unforgettable 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Australia were struggling at 91/7 while chasing 292. With the match seemingly slipping away, Maxwell produced one of the greatest innings in ODI history.

Battling severe cramps and struggling to move freely, he smashed an unbeaten 201 from just 128 deliveries, including 21 fours and 10 sixes.

His incredible partnership with captain Pat Cummins rescued Australia and secured one of the most memorable victories in World Cup history.

It was an innings that transformed Maxwell from an explosive entertainer into a cricketing legend.

THREE WORLD CUP TROPHIES

Maxwell was part of three World Cup-winning Australian squads:

- 2015: ICC Men's Cricket World Cup

- 2021: ICC Men's T20 World Cup

- 2023: ICC Men's Cricket World Cup

He also produced the fastest century in Men's Cricket World Cup history at the time, reaching his hundred from just 40 balls against the Netherlands in 2023.

NO INTERNATIONAL FAREWELL AT THE MCG

Maxwell had hoped for a possible farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during Australia's upcoming T20I series against England.

However, Australia's selectors are focusing on younger players as the team prepares for the future, including the 2028 Olympic cycle.

Maxwell acknowledged the team's direction and explained that he was ready to move on.

He also wants to focus on his physical condition and give himself the best chance of continuing in franchise cricket.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR MAXWELL?

International retirement does not mean the end of Maxwell's cricket journey.

He is expected to continue playing franchise T20 cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in Australia's Big Bash League.

The explosive all-rounder has left international cricket, but supporters will still have opportunities to watch the Big Show entertain crowds around the world.

THE FINAL WORD

From his unconventional batting to his unbelievable match-winning performances, Glenn Maxwell brought something different to cricket.

He was unpredictable, fearless and capable of changing a match in a matter of overs.

Australia loses one of its most entertaining white-ball players, but cricket gains another unforgettable legacy.

14 years. Three World Cup titles. One unforgettable Big Show.

Thank you, Glenn Maxwell.
