India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill has highlighted the urgent need for Hardik Pandya’s return to the squad, calling the all-rounder’s absence a critical void in the team’s lower middle-order. Pandya’s ability to bat at number six or seven while also contributing seam bowling across all phases of an innings has left a noticeable gap, particularly as India’s top four batters remain settled and right-handed.
Gill noted that Pandya’s return would resolve the uncertainty at positions seven and eight, restoring balance to the batting lineup ahead of high-stakes matches. The 32-year-old has been sidelined since the IPL due to recurring injuries, most recently a shin stress issue, delaying his comeback to international cricket.
His absence has compounded scheduling challenges, as key players must now juggle ODI commitments with preparations for the upcoming World Test Championship, further limiting India’s flexibility in the middle order.
