Why a tennis player was disqualified for walking off court mid-match – and why he apologized

November 2, 2026

During a Challenger tournament match in Ecuador, tennis competitor Camilo Ugo Carabelli chose to abandon the court following a game that tied the opening set at five games apiece. Protesting the rain-damaged clay surface caused by severe local storms, the athlete dropped his equipment and departed despite warnings from the chair official, resulting in a default victory for his opponent João Lucas Reis da Silva.

The following day, the Argentine competitor released a public statement expressing regret for his abrupt departure and manner, clarifying that he felt the playing surface presented a safety hazard rather than intending to forfeit.

This incident follows other notable disqualifications in tennis history involving prominent competitors like Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic, both of whom previously suffered defaults at major tournaments for accidentally hitting officials with balls. In this recent instance, heavy weather continued to plague the region, ultimately forcing tournament organizers to suspend the final match.

The competitor acknowledged that he failed to appreciate the full ramifications of walking away from the fixture while the official attempted to intervene.
