Calvert-Lewin stars but Botman struggles - player ratings for Leeds v Newcastle

Dominic Calvert-Lewin delivered an exceptional showing to power Leeds past Newcastle, netting his team's third strike along with an earlier header that went in via Jayden Bogle, bringing his career tally against the Magpies to eight. Bogle was officially credited with that second Leeds goal, having also forced opposing goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek into multiple key interventions after Anton Stach earned an immediate corner in the opening minute.

Ao Tanaka broke the deadlock with a twice-deflected effort assisted by Noah Okafor, who later capped the scoring with Leeds' fourth goal after also setting up the opener. Defensively, James Trafford secured a shutout highlighted by a crucial stop against Harvey Barnes, while Nico Elvedi, Tarik Muharemovic, James Justin, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Ethan Ampadu anchored a commanding performance, before substitutes Melvin Bard, Brenden Aaronson, Harry Wilson, Lukas Nmecha, Daniel James, and Sean Longstaff entered the fray.

Newcastle endured a miserable outing that saw defender Sven Botman and captain Malick Thiaw repeatedly outmatched by Calvert-Lewin across the decisive goals. Lewis Hall found himself displaced during the hosts' second strike following his contract extension, while Amar Dedic battled through a hamstring concern only to be constantly pinned down on his side, and Nico Gonzalez was substituted just 19 minutes into the match.

Hornicek prevented an even heavier rout by denying Bogle twice and Calvert-Lewin once, but the visitors could do little to prevent Leeds' dominant four-goal triumph.
