Indian skipper Shubman Gill recently explained that he would have liked the five-game one-day international assignment against New Zealand placed prior to the T20 matches, provided every squad member was ready. Because the multi-format tour positioned the one-day games between the T20 matches and two subsequent Tests, team leadership had to shield certain specialists from heavy workloads, resulting in key names like Jasprit Bumrah missing the 50-over fixtures entirely.
Gill noted that a reversed sequence would have enabled his strongest roster to feature throughout the entire series without fitness concerns ahead of the red-ball matches. The scheduling conflict stems from balancing preparations for both the upcoming World Test Championship final and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Additionally, leadership duties for the one-day games are split, with Gill captaining the opening three fixtures before Shreyas Iyer takes over for the final two.
