Two decades ago, the inaugural PGA Tour stop in Mexico nearly lost its biggest draw before it began. Fred Funk considered withdrawing after his caddie, Mark Long, suggested the El Camaleon layout did not suit his game.
Tournament director Larson Segerdahl successfully urged the veteran to reconsider, leading to a historic performance. Funk triumphed at age 50, securing a wire-to-wire win by defeating Jose Coceres in a playoff after sinking a crucial birdie putt on the final hole.
Since that 2007 debut, the tournament has transformed from a risky venture into a cornerstone of golf in Latin America. Now branded as the World Wide Technology Championship, the event has surpassed the expectations of its early organizers.
Taylor Ives noted that the tournament's evolution reflects its significant growth over the past twenty years.
