Lee Westwood recently opened up about how his potential future as a European team leader at the international golf competition was handled prior to his defection to the Saudi-backed circuit. During a podcast appearance, the veteran golfer mentioned that discussions regarding the 2023 leadership role in Italy took place around the same time he was weighing an offer from the rival league.

He recalled speaking with tour official Guy Kinnings to gauge whether taking the lucrative tour offer would completely eliminate his chances of holding the helm, and was informed that the opportunity would become highly improbable. Ultimately, the athlete chose the breakaway tour despite the warning, though he noted that leadership was never a primary ambition for him anyway due to his preference for total individual control.
