The New Orleans Saints commenced their season with an agonizing 31-30 overtime defeat on the road against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. After falling behind 21-0 during a difficult opening half, New Orleans mounted a fierce rally to push the contest into an extra session, ultimately falling short when a go-ahead two-point conversion attempt failed.

Starting quarterback Tyler Shough powered the comeback by amassing 410 passing yards to establish a new career benchmark, while wide receiver Chris Olave also achieved a personal best in single-game yardage.

Playing without defensive end Cameron Jordan, the New Orleans defense managed to take down Detroit signal-caller Jared Goff only once throughout the day. The setback leaves the Saints at 0-1 as they prepare for a Week 2 matchup against the 1-0 Baltimore Ravens.
