Rory McIlroy has publicly aligned himself with the DP World Tour leadership, specifically endorsing CEO Guy Kinnings's stance that LIV Golf has actively sought to undermine the organization. Kinnings announced that starting in 2027, the DP World Tour will prohibit any players associated with LIV Golf from participating in its events, marking a significant departure from the tour's previous policy of allowing such competition.
Furthermore, Kinnings clarified that those who forfeit their membership will remain ineligible for Ryder Cup captaincy, a rule established in 2017 that McIlroy noted he was well aware of when he previously considered leaving the tour.
McIlroy, who is currently competing in Abu Dhabi as he seeks his eighth Race to Dubai title to match Colin Montgomerie's record, acknowledged that while the current landscape has increased earnings for players, a reset is necessary for the long-term health of the sport. He reflected on his own past discussions with former CEO Keith Pelley regarding the consequences of leaving the tour, emphasizing that the requirements for future captaincy were clear long before the emergence of LIV Golf.
