The College Football Playoff rankings have already ignited debate, and LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin’s team finds itself in a precarious position. With a 6-2 record and a No.
15 ranking in the AP Poll, LSU sits at No. 14 in the first official CFP rankings—just outside the initial playoff field.
The Tigers’ two losses, both on the road, were narrow defeats by a combined total of nine points, yet they remain the only SEC team outside the top 12, trailing powerhouse opponents like Alabama (No. 5), Georgia (No.
2), and Ole Miss (No. 10).
The committee’s placement of six conference teams ahead of LSU—including Tennessee (No. 13) and Texas (No.
7)—raises questions about how marquee wins and schedule strength are being evaluated. LSU has consistently dominated when it wins, but the committee’s criteria may not yet reflect the Tigers’ aggressive play or the quality of their remaining opponents, three of which are also ranked higher.
