Crawley moves Kent towards parity with Lancashire

Seventeen wickets tumbled on the opening day at Canterbury as bowlers dominated Kent's County Championship Division Two clash with Lancashire. After electing to field, the hosts initially endured a frustrating start as Lancashire openers Michael Jones (44) and Keaton Jennings (30) combined for an 81-run stand, with Jennings surviving an early dropped catch by wicketkeeper Chris Benjamin.

However, the away side suffered a stunning afternoon collapse, shedding all ten wickets for just 88 runs to finish all out for 161. Khaled Ahmed led the charge with 5-42, including late dismissals of Mitch Stanley and James Anderson off consecutive deliveries, while Matt Milnes claimed 4-28 by removing Jones, Marcus Harris, Arav Shetty, and Tom Bailey.

Matt Quinn also struck by removing Josh Bohannon for 20, and Matty Hurst's 37 ended via a Khaled delivery, leaving George Balderson unbeaten on five.

Kent endured a similarly turbulent reply, reaching stumps on 151-7 to sit just ten runs behind with three bonus points to Lancashire's two. Anderson spearheaded the bowling with 3-30 (also recorded as 3-25), removing Ben Compton for six, Sam Northeast for zero, and pinning Tawanda Muyeye leg-before for 18 immediately after being struck for three straight boundaries.

Bailey dismissed Benjamin for 15, Bertie Foreman for one, and trapped Keith Dudgeon leg-before for a duck, while Stanley removed Daniel Bell-Drummond for nine. Amid the carnage, Zak Crawley held Kent's innings together, surviving a dropped chance of his own in the field earlier to anchor the reply with an unbeaten 68.
