Newly released police bodycam footage reveals an unexpected basketball discussion between former NBA star J.R. Smith and officers during his arrest in Texas last September.
Smith, who retired in 2020 after a 14-year career spanning the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, was pulled over on suspicion of an outstanding warrant. During the stop, Smith proudly recounted his two championship rings—earned with Cleveland in 2016 and Los Angeles in 2020—before referencing his time alongside Kyrie Irving and LeBron James.
One officer, a self-proclaimed Dallas Mavericks fan, took issue with James, calling him responsible for the 2025 trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Lakers, declaring, *“I’m still mad”* about the move. Moments later, Smith was arrested after confirming he faced charges for alleged assault causing bodily injury in a domestic incident in Tarrant County.
His attorney later stated Smith was *“eager to see this matter resolved”* and remained *“presumed innocent.”*
