3 Storylines I'm Watching in Auburn's Matchup With No. 1 Georgia

October 15, 2026

Auburn’s quest for its first ranked win under Alex Golesh faces a daunting test this weekend as the Tigers travel to Sanford Stadium to take on the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs, SEC champions in three of the last four seasons and the top team in the nation, present a formidable challenge, especially for Auburn’s struggling offensive line. Quarterback Byrum Brown, currently the most sacked player in college football with 18 takeaways in five games, will need protection against Georgia’s elite pass rush—the Bulldogs rank fourth in the SEC with 17 sacks this season.

Golesh’s unit has rotated heavily, and their ability to keep Brown upright early could determine whether Auburn can mount a serious upset bid against a defense that thrives on disrupting quarterbacks.

The absence of star linebacker Xavier Atkins—sidelined for an undisclosed period—leaves Auburn scrambling to fill a critical void in its defense. Sophomore Elijah Melendez, leading the team with 38 tackles and tied for the lead in sacks (3.0), will be the focal point, but backup sophomore Bryce Deas and junior De’Marcus Riddick (a former All-SEC Freshman Team honoree) will also need to step up.

Georgia’s balanced attack, ranked in the top six of the SEC in both rushing and passing, demands a stout middle-linebacker presence. Meanwhile, Auburn’s ground game remains a work in progress, with Brown averaging 68.8 rushing yards per game—the only consistent contributor in a unit ranked 42nd nationally.

Golesh has emphasized running the ball in 2026, but finding a reliable lead back alongside Brown remains an unresolved challenge as the Tigers look to avoid another loss to a top-tier opponent.
