Smith argues that the team's two losses against unranked opponents, Florida and Oklahoma, should disqualify them from such a high standing. He further suggested that the committee may be prioritizing the Texas brand to ensure the program remains in contention for the postseason.

Despite these concerns, head coach Steve Sarkisian maintains that his squad's victories over top-ranked Ohio State, Tennessee, and Ole Miss justify their current position.
