Rinky Hijikata secured a major upset at the Paris Masters, overcoming Novak Djokovic in a three-set battle that concluded 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Despite suffering from neck discomfort that nearly forced him to withdraw, the Australian qualifier delivered a high-level performance to eliminate the seven-time tournament champion.
This result effectively ended Djokovic's hopes of qualifying for the season-ending championship. Hijikata, who is now poised to reach a career-high ranking, will next compete against Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Etcheverry earned his spot in the next round by defeating Alex de Minaur in straight sets.
