Las Vegas Raiders rookie sensation Ashton Jeanty, once projected as a franchise cornerstone after his No. 6 overall draft selection in 2025, has seen his role shrink dramatically in his sophomore season.
The former Heisman Trophy finalist, who started strong with 102 rushing yards and 45 receiving yards in Week 1, has now been reduced to just two carries in Week 8—a career low—while also logging only three catches for 45 yards in a 38-33 shootout win over the New York Jets. His workload has steadily declined since that early-season outburst, with his rushing attempts dwindling each week, culminating in a near-complete absence from the backfield on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium, where he failed to record a single rushing attempt for the first time this year.
Instead, fellow rookie Mike Washington Jr. claimed the starting role for the first time, setting a career high with 38 offensive snaps in the process, while Jeanty’s efficiency as a runner has also dropped, averaging 0.6 fewer yards per carry than last season.
Raiders coach Klint Kubiak acknowledged the shift, emphasizing that Jeanty remains a key part of the offense but suggesting Washington’s increased opportunities were intentional, framing both backs as vital to the team’s future success in both the run and pass games.
