Veteran batsman Wayne Madsen has extended his long tenure with Derbyshire by inking a one-year contract for the 2027 season. The upcoming campaign will mark his 19th year with the county side, though the new agreement is strictly limited to red-ball cricket following his earlier retirement from domestic T20 action.
Derbyshire management pointed to his enduring first-class output, which included a pair of centuries during the recent summer, alongside his leadership as key factors in securing his return.
Madsen, who resumed the captaincy ahead of the 2025 campaign and skippered the side through consecutive summers, noted that the specialized format aligns well with his personal arrangements after relocating back to South Africa with his family. Head of Cricket Mickey Arthur praised the veteran's ongoing contributions and competitive standard.
Since joining the club back in 2009, Madsen has amassed upwards of 24,000 runs across all formats alongside 52 individual hundreds.
