During the opening match of the series at Eden Park, Indian batter Virat Kohli established a new benchmark by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's previous milestone for most runs scored by an Indian player against New Zealand in the fifty-over format. His aggressive knock of 74 runs from 51 deliveries brought his total against the Black Caps to 1,971 runs, placing him ahead of Tendulkar as well as matching and eclipsing Ricky Ponting's historical tally.
In the course of the exact same innings, Kohli also secured a global first by becoming the initial player in ODI history to accumulate 13,000 runs while operating specifically from the number three batting position.
