George Russell’s frustration over Mercedes’ decision to abort a qualifying lap at the Brazilian Grand Prix left him just shy of a historic pole position. The British driver, who was leading the session, was instructed to abandon his lap by race engineer Marcus Dudley, who anticipated worsening track conditions.
However, the opposite occurred, and Russell ultimately finished second behind Lando Norris, though his five-place grid penalty will see him start seventh. Team principal Toto Wolff later suggested that Russell’s aborted lap would still have placed him second-fastest, just 80 milliseconds behind Norris but ahead of Alexander Albon’s Williams, indicating how close the race for fastest time was.
