Why Russell's 'pole' was lost either way - and it hurt like hell

November 8, 2026

George Russell’s frustration at missing out on pole position at the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix was compounded by the realization that his best qualifying lap would have been lost anyway. The Mercedes driver, who was already saddled with a five-place grid penalty, was convinced he was on track for a faster time than eventual polesitter Lando Norris when his race engineer, Marcus Dudley, advised him to abort the lap.

Russell had nearly closed the gap on Williams teammate Alex Albon, whose presence in the final sector threatened to disrupt Russell’s rhythm through critical corners like Turn 11 and Juncao. Even if Albon had completed his lap cleanly, his slower pace would have still blocked Russell from overtaking Norris, making the lap’s potential futility clear in hindsight.

Toto Wolff later confirmed that Russell was ‘very slightly up’ on Norris but was being slowed by Albon’s trailing car, while Mercedes’ Andrew Shovlin noted that continuing risked further complications.
