The Southeastern Conference recently acknowledged a significant officiating blunder during a late September matchup between the Tennessee Volunteers and the Texas Longhorns. Officials failed to penalize an illegal onside kick executed by Tennessee during the closing moments of the contest, which should have triggered a five-yard penalty and a replay of the down.
During the final moments of the game, a kickoff executed by Tennessee was initially muffed by Texas receiver Ryan Wingo and recovered by the home squad. Following reviews, league administrators confirmed that the kicker started his motion from an incorrect spot behind the restraining line and improperly shifted laterally after the referee's ready signal.
