Northwestern celebrated the opening of the brand new Ryan Field in grand fashion on Friday evening, routing Penn State by a score of 34-13 in front of a packed crowd in Evanston. Funded largely by billionaire Pat Ryan Sr., who cut the ceremonial ribbon alongside his family earlier in the day, the $875 million venue provided the backdrop for a dominant rushing performance by the Wildcats.
Head coach David Braun described the momentous atmosphere as resembling a dream after his team improved its record to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten.
Propelled by an explosive ground game that racked up 413 total yards, Northwestern quickly seized control of the contest. Running back Caleb Komolafe led the charge with a career-best 188 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, while teammate Joseph Himon II contributed 162 yards and two scores on just 10 rushing attempts.
Defensively, the Wildcats sealed the victory in the final quarter thanks to an interception by linebacker Braydon Brus and a tumbling pick from safety Robert Fitzgerald.
