Rohit Sharma is poised to etch his name deeper into cricket history as India’s star opener prepares to face New Zealand in an upcoming five-match ODI series. With just 348 runs needed to reach 21,000 in international cricket, Sharma stands on the brink of becoming the first Indian batter to achieve this milestone.
His overseas campaign in SENA conditions is equally historic, needing only 36 more runs to hit 5,000 in South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia—a feat no Indian opener has accomplished. Sharma has already amassed 4,964 runs in those conditions, including 17 centuries, and a single ODI hundred in New Zealand would also make him the fourth Indian to score centuries in all four SENA nations, joining Tendulkar, Kohli, and Dhawan.
Beyond runs, he is 19 sixes away from smashing 400 ODI sixes, a record he’d claim as the format’s all-time leader, while also chasing 700 international sixes overall. His consistency in winning causes is another target, with 183 runs required to reach 15,000 in matches his team has won—a club currently limited to Ponting, Kohli, and Tendulkar.
Sharma’s recent form, including a 225-run haul against the West Indies at home, underscores his readiness to add to his legacy ahead of the 2027 World Cup, where his place remains a topic of discussion despite his prolific numbers: 35 ODI centuries, 63 fifties, and a strike rate of 104.67 this year alone.
