The Detroit Tigers made two key offseason moves to reshape their bullpen. They declined the $12 million option on veteran closer Kenley Jansen, opting instead for a $2 million buyout to free him up as a 39-year-old pursuing the 500-save milestone.
Jansen’s season showed flashes of effectiveness—including a 2.40 ERA in his final 30 innings—but also struggles in high-leverage spots, where he allowed a .714 OPS and surrendered four walk-off homers. The Tigers now lack a clear closer heading into the offseason, with Will Vest sidelined by injury and Tyler Holton’s role uncertain as the team evaluates options like free agents Raisel Iglesias or Gregory Soto.
On the other hand, Detroit re-signed right-hander Drew Anderson to a $10 million option, extending his second year with the team after a strong 2025 campaign. Anderson, who transitioned to the rotation full-time, posted a 3.67 ERA across 108 innings and improved to a 2.84 ERA in his final nine starts.
The Tigers also brought back reliever Jacob Waguespack on a $1.3 million deal, though their bullpen remains in flux without a proven closer to anchor the late innings.
