India’s veteran off-spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad has voiced frustration over her exclusion from the national team, highlighting her unfinished milestone of 99 ODI wickets and questioning the selection process. The 35-year-old Karnataka cricketer, who last played for India in a home Test against South Africa in 2024, sustained a serious knee injury during that match, sidelining her for six months.
Despite her recovery, Gayakwad claims she has not been given a fair opportunity to return to the squad, contrasting her situation with players who were reinstated after injuries during the 2024 ODI World Cup. She also pointed out inconsistencies in fitness protocols, noting that she was asked to play domestic and India A matches to prove her readiness, while newer players seemingly bypassed similar requirements.
Currently representing Karnataka in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy Elite and retained by Gujarat Giants for the upcoming Women’s Premier League, Gayakwad’s future in the national team remains uncertain as she awaits answers for her exclusion.
