Alistair Docherty’s 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season took a pivotal turn after a frustrating stretch of two consecutive missed cuts followed a strong T2 finish in the Bahamas. Frustrated by his putting struggles, Docherty experimented with a radical solution: he swapped his traditional putter for a wedge grip cut to just under the length of his 60-degree wedge, a setup he discovered during a casual conversation with his putting coach.
The unconventional approach paid off immediately, with Docherty ‘hooping’ putts all day during his first test of the modified setup before bringing it to the Argentina Open, where he secured his first professional victory. The win was more than just a personal milestone—it also earned Docherty enough points to finally lock down his PGA Tour card for 2027, capping years of near-misses in the qualifying process.
Now a rookie for next season, Docherty credits the putter’s simplicity to his improved confidence, though he acknowledges putting remains an area for growth. His bag now stands out among peers, featuring 14 identical grips across his clubs, a quirk born from his hands-on approach to equipment tweaks.
