Kansas City held a slim 14-12 advantage at intermission over the Jets following a turbulent opening two quarters that featured an injury scare for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes was dropped behind the line by defender David Bailey and briefly headed to the sidelines for medical evaluation after coughing up a turnover, though he eventually tested his arm and returned before the break.
Chiefs leader Andy Reid confirmed to broadcast reporters that his signal-caller sustained a minor elbow ailment during the sequence. Mahomes had previously connected on a pair of scoring tosses to Kenneth Walker while completing eleven of fifteen pass attempts for 120 yards prior to halftime.
New York countered solely through placekicker Jason Sanders, who accounted for all twelve visiting points by attempting five field goals without a single punt being forced from his offense. Geno Smith directed the opposing attack by completing ten of seventeen passes for 81 yards, while miscues hampered both sides including lost fumbles by Braelon Allen and Justin Fields.
Sanders missed kicks from 53 and 51 yards in the closing seconds of the half, leaving Kansas City narrowly ahead as the teams prepared to receive the ball for the third quarter.
