NI squad only picked on merit - O'Neill

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has selected a 28-man group for the upcoming four-fixture international window, which commences with a Nations League trip to Georgia on 25 September. The roster features four teenage prospects: Ceadach O'Neill, Everton attacker Braiden Graham, Blackburn Rovers defender Tom Atcheson, and Liverpool winger Kieran Morrison, who is currently loaned to Sheffield Wednesday.

While Atcheson and Morrison were born in England, both qualify through ancestral ties and earned youth caps before making their full international debuts in March and June, respectively. Defending their call-ups, O'Neill emphasized that both have demonstrated the required quality on the pitch and earned their places purely on merit over other contenders.

Accelerating youth development remains a long-standing tradition for the national side rather than a modern novelty, as O'Neill referenced his own debut at age 18 in 1988 alongside Norman Whiteside featuring at the 1982 World Cup at just 17. The current senior pool reflects this ongoing philosophy, with Conor Bradley, Isaac Price, and siblings Shea and Pierce Charles having all debuted as teenagers, while Sunderland teammates Dan Ballard and Trai Hume entered the setup as 20-year-olds.

O'Neill highlighted that identifying emerging talent is essential to fortifying the country's long-term competitive strength.
