Michael Atherton has defended the decision-making process behind James Anderson's departure from Lancashire, dismissing claims that the club managed the situation poorly. Despite Anderson taking 50 wickets at an average of 17.68 during the 2026 County Championship, the club opted against renewing his contract as part of a strategic shift led by director of cricket Paul Farbrace.
Atherton noted that the veteran bowler was informed of the decision through a direct, face-to-face meeting rather than indirect communication. While the club finished near the bottom of Division Two, Farbrace took full responsibility for the move during a meeting with members.
Anderson, who is now 44, has not yet decided on his future in the sport, though he is scheduled to participate in the Italia T10 League and holds a co-ownership stake in the Napoli Knights.
