Kimi Antonelli secured his maiden Formula 1 world championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, finishing third behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Despite the historic achievement, Mercedes officials revealed the driver nearly failed to finish due to a cracked sump and an oil leak that impacted his engine performance during the final four laps.
The weekend proved challenging for the young champion, who also contended with a viral illness that caused him to miss Thursday media obligations and struggled with a difficult qualifying session. Antonelli later admitted he was so overcome with emotion during the final lap that his vision was obscured by tears, forcing him to reduce his speed to ensure he brought the car home safely.
