Formula 1 drivers are voicing significant concerns regarding the surface quality at the Circuit of the Americas ahead of the United States Grand Prix. Max Verstappen reported that severe track undulations have caused him physical distress, forcing him to rely on painkillers and specific driving techniques to protect his lower back.
Lando Norris echoed these sentiments, noting that he is also taking medication to manage discomfort during sessions. Oscar Piastri highlighted the danger of the bumps at Turns 1 and 19, comparing them to motocross obstacles that could complicate overtaking maneuvers during the race.
Conversely, Lewis Hamilton defended the track, suggesting that the uneven surface adds necessary character to the circuit. Bobby Epstein, the venue's representative, acknowledged an issue at Turn 1 that was discovered late but maintained that the rest of the facility has been properly addressed.
