Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule stated he would consider stepping down from his position if the hostile environment surrounding his team continued to endanger his children, following an incident where a fan verbally abused his 13-year-old daughter after a 17-10 defeat to Washington. The loss, which occurred after Washington scored two late touchdowns to overcome a deficit, marked the third consecutive game in which the Cornhuskers surrendered a lead in the final quarter, dropping their overall record to 5-3 and their Big Ten mark to 2-3.
Despite his initial willingness to quit to protect his family, Rhule decided to remain in his role after his 10-year-old daughter expressed her love for the program and urged him to continue. He clarified that while he tolerates standard fan frustration, he will not coach for individuals who target his children, noting that his decision to stay was influenced by his wife and the support of his younger daughter.
This situation follows a similar incident reported by South Carolina coach Shane Beamer, whose daughters had also been exposed to online criticism following a recent loss.
