LIV Golf’s controversial existence is nearing its end after its primary financial backer, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), announced it would no longer support the league. The Saudi-backed tour, which spent over $5 billion since its 2021 launch, had already faced mounting challenges this year, including the early cancellation of its 2026 season and a player exodus that saw stars like Collin Morikawa, Ian Poulter, Tyrrell Hatton, and Graeme McDowell depart.
The league’s final event took place in Indianapolis in August, marking the end of its original run. Attempts to secure new investors and restructure under an independent board failed to stabilize the tour, with key figures like Lee Westwood dismissing proposed changes as unworkable.
Meanwhile, the European Tour’s decision to bar LIV-aligned players from its 2027 membership—effectively ending their Ryder Cup eligibility—further isolated the league. Former executive Mark King was recently appointed as a senior adviser, but with no viable financial or operational path forward, LIV’s future now appears uncertain beyond a missed deadline for confirming players for next season.
