The End Of An Era! Cristiano Ronaldo Announces Portugal Retirement After 23 Years

Football has witnessed one of its most emotional announcements.

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on an extraordinary career with the Portugal national team.

The 41-year-old superstar confirmed the decision on Thursday, November 5, through a video message shared on social media.

In his announcement, Ronaldo delivered an emotional message about passing the responsibility to the next generation.

"Today, the time has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision," he said.

He also confirmed that he would hand back Portugal's iconic No. 7 shirt after the November international break.

23 YEARS. ONE LEGENDARY JOURNEY.

Ronaldo made his senior international debut for Portugal in 2003, aged just 18.

What followed was a remarkable journey spanning more than two decades, during which he became the face of Portuguese football.

His international career concludes with:

- Appearances: 234

- Goals: 146

- Major international trophies: 2

- International debut: 2003

- European Championship: 2016

- UEFA Nations League: 2019

He finishes as the men's international football record-holder for both appearances and goals.

FROM HEARTBREAK TO EUROPEAN GLORY

Ronaldo's international journey was not always filled with celebrations.

Portugal suffered disappointment at major tournaments, including the 2004 European Championship final on home soil, where Greece defeated them.

But in 2016, Ronaldo finally lifted his first major international trophy.

Despite being forced off injured during the European Championship final against France, he watched from the sidelines as Portugal secured a historic 1–0 victory after extra time.

Three years later, he captained Portugal to another major triumph, winning the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019.

These victories transformed his international legacy.

SIX WORLD CUPS. ONE UNMATCHED RECORD.

Ronaldo also made history by appearing in six different FIFA World Cup editions: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.

He became the first men's player to score in six separate World Cup tournaments.

His international career featured unforgettable goals, dramatic comebacks and performances that inspired generations of footballers.

Although Portugal's 2026 World Cup campaign ended in the round of 16, Ronaldo leaves behind records that may stand for decades.

THE FINAL CHAPTER

The announcement comes after a turbulent period involving Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo left the national team's camp in September following a disagreement over his playing time. He later apologised to his teammates and supporters and accepted a disciplinary suspension from the Portuguese Football Federation.

Despite earlier insisting that he was not ready to retire internationally, the legendary forward has now made his decision.

His announcement marks the end of an era for Portugal, with the next generation preparing to take responsibility for the national team.

WHAT NEXT FOR CRISTIANO RONALDO?

International retirement does not mean retirement from professional football.

Ronaldo is expected to continue his club career with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

His pursuit of 1,000 official senior career goals also remains a major personal milestone.

For now, however, the biggest question is who will inherit Portugal's famous No. 7 shirt.

THE FINAL WORD

From an 18-year-old debutant in 2003 to Portugal's greatest-ever goalscorer, Cristiano Ronaldo's international journey has been extraordinary.

He brought Portugal its first European Championship, delivered another major trophy in 2019 and established records that redefined international football.

The goals, the celebrations, the tears and the unforgettable moments will remain part of football history.

234 appearances. 146 goals. Two major international trophies. One unforgettable legacy.

Thank you, Cristiano Ronaldo.
