In Raheem Morris, 49ers have rare defensive coordinator able to ‘humble’ Rams

Raheem Morris orchestrated a commanding defensive showing as the San Francisco 49ers dominated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in Melbourne, Australia, to open Week 1 on Thursday night. Utilizing clever pre-snap looks and disciplined schemes, Morris repeatedly frustrated quarterback Matthew Stafford and coach Sean McVay's attack.

Key plays included a crucial fourth-and-goal stop by the San Francisco front alongside an acrobatic first-half interception pulled down by third-year cornerback Renardo Green. Linebacker Fred Warner praised Morris after the victory, noting the triumph began directly with the defensive coordinator's leadership.

The lopsided clash also highlighted contrasting travel schedules between the two divisional rivals. While San Francisco acclimatized with a full week of preparation abroad, the Rams arrived in Melbourne only 28 hours prior to kickoff to maintain their domestic body clocks.

That strategy backfired for Los Angeles, an outfit heavily favored to capture the Super Bowl, as Stafford struggled mightily to mount sustained offense against Kyle Shanahan's well-prepared squad.
