Iga Świątek, the six-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, was forced to withdraw from the Wuhan Open semifinal after a visibly distressing leg injury during her match against compatriot Maja Chwalińska.
The Polish star, who entered the match as the favorite, lost 5–7 in the first set and was trailing 15–40 in the second before turning to her team in tears. Physiotherapist Maciej Ryszczuk advised her to either take additional painkillers or retire, emphasizing that continuing would serve no purpose.
Świątek ultimately chose to end the match, leaving Chwalińska to advance to the final against Sonay Kartal in her first WTA 1000-level championship match. Chwalińska later praised Świątek as a 'living legend,' acknowledging her struggles and wishing her a swift recovery.
Świątek’s injury has also impacted her standing in the year-end tournament race, where she currently sits in 10th place with only one spot remaining among the top eight secured so far.
