Unranked Auburn defeated the No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs 27-24 on Saturday, with Alex McPherson delivering a 34-yard field goal as the clock hit zero.
The upset marks the second consecutive weekend that the nation's top team fell to an unranked opponent, following Oklahoma's victory over Texas the previous week. Auburn entered the contest in Athens, Georgia, as an 18.5-point underdog.
McPherson's performance carries significant personal weight after he underwent surgery in 2024 to remove his entire large intestine due to severe ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The procedure followed a period where he lost 55 pounds, dropping to 110 pounds at the time of his hospital admission.
Now fully recovered and in his final season at Auburn, the kicker is aiming for a 2027 NFL draft entry that would see him join his older brother, Evan, who is currently in his sixth year with the Cincinnati Bengals.
