Raul Rojas Jr. delivered a stunning upset at Hype Fighting Italy on Tuesday, submitting former interim UFC Welterweight champion Colby Covington in just 43 seconds.
The matchup was arranged on short notice after longtime rival Dillon Danis withdrew due to injury, leaving the promoter scrambling for a replacement. Rojas, who was attending the event as an audience member, stepped up at the last moment, accepting the challenge with three days of preparation.
Despite Covington’s elite wrestling background and NCAA Division I All-American credentials, Rojas dominated early, securing a takedown and transitioning into a rear-naked choke that forced the tap before the first minute elapsed. The victory extends Rojas’ MMA winning streak to six fights and keeps his sights set on becoming the youngest UFC champion in history.
Covington, who had not trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu in years, acknowledged the loss without excuses, while Rojas credited Covington for the unexpected opportunity.
