Hampshire & Scotland bowler Wheal retires

October 16, 2026

Brad Wheal, the Scotland and Hampshire fast bowler, has announced his retirement from professional cricket due to persistent injuries that have limited his ability to continue at the highest level. Over a decade with the national team, Wheal took 51 wickets in 44 matches and was a key figure in four T20 World Cups, including the tournament held in India earlier this year.

His domestic career with Hampshire saw notable success, including winning the One Day Cup in 2018 and the T20 Blast in 2022, while his international journey included four World Cup appearances and lifelong memories from representing Scotland on the global stage.

In a statement, Wheal reflected on his career, highlighting the challenges posed by recurring injuries—including four stress fractures in his back and recent knee surgery—that ultimately made it impossible to sustain the demands of fast bowling. Despite the difficult decision, he expressed gratitude for the support of teammates, coaches, and fans, particularly those who traveled internationally to cheer Scotland on.

Wheal’s retirement marks the end of an era for a player who left a lasting impact on both club and country, though he plans to remain involved as a supporter of the sport from afar.
