The Oklahoma Sooners’ bowl hopes hang precariously on the edge after a season that has already fallen far short of expectations. Entering November with four losses, the team—led by head coach Brent Venables—now faces an uphill battle to secure a postseason berth, needing to split their final four regular-season games just to qualify.
The Sooners’ 27-year bowl streak, dating back to Bob Stoops’ arrival in 1998, is at serious risk, with the last time they missed the postseason dating to the final season of John Blake’s tenure. USA TODAY Sports’ latest projections place Oklahoma in the Las Vegas Bowl on December 31, where they would face the Washington Huskies—a matchup that would fulfill the Pac-12’s legacy bowl bid, despite the Huskies’ recent move to the Big Ten.
The Sooners and Huskies have a storied history, with Oklahoma winning two of their three prior meetings, including a 55-14 rout in Seattle in 2008. For Venables and his team, even a trip to the Las Vegas Bowl would represent a rare November success, as a .500 finish in the month would be necessary to keep the bowl streak alive.
