Chelsea miss Joao Pedro... and can't stop conceding goals

Xabi Alonso's defensive concerns intensified following Chelsea's 3-0 loss at Brentford on Friday, where a 61st-minute strike from Jaidon Anthony triggered a second-half collapse. The defeat leaves Chelsea having shipped 12 goals this term—the top flight's worst defensive tally despite having played an extra fixture over most rivals—while Alonso became only the sixth manager in Premier League history to see his side surrender at least twice across each of his first five matches in charge.

Set-piece frailties persist, with the club now having conceded 23 times from dead-ball situations since the beginning of last season. Amid frequent tactical changes, Alonso handed debuts to 36-year-old Jordan Henderson against his old side and 16-year-old midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, who became the youngest Premier League player in Chelsea history, bringing the total number of debuts under the manager to 11.

At the other end of the pitch, the absence of Joao Pedro due to a knee injury severely hampered Chelsea's attack. The Brazilian forward had entered the matchday leading the division with six direct goal involvements—split evenly between three goals and three assists over four games—and his chemistry with and £117m record signing Morgan Rogers was sorely missed.
