An independent review panel has determined that Chelsea forward Cole Palmer should have received a straight red card during a match against Tottenham earlier this autumn. Three members of the five-person committee concluded that his challenge on Mateus Fernandes involved dangerous and excessive force with contact to the head, though they agreed that the video assistant referee was correct not to prompt an on-field review at the time.
Palmer was ultimately dismissed later in the same fixture following a second bookable offense against Conor Gallagher.
In separate assessments from the same round of matches, the panel evaluated decisions involving Aston Villa, Manchester City, Coventry, and Fulham. Figures released by the Premier League indicate that eighty-eight percent of key incidents evaluated this season have been judged correctly on the pitch, with accuracy rising to ninety-nine percent once video reviews are factored into the totals.
