An Early Look at the 2027 Guardians

October 20, 2026

The Cleveland Guardians are already generating buzz for the 2027 season, with a projected lineup that could see significant changes behind the plate and at first base. Catcher Austin Hedges, who posted a 100 wRC+ campaign, is expected to return for one final season while Patrick Bailey takes on a more prominent role.

The team may also rely on Kody Huff as a backup catcher and first baseman. At first base, Ralphy Velazquez is poised to step into a full-time role, offering a power-hitting presence similar to Chase DeLauter.

However, the Guardians face a critical need to upgrade their right-handed bat at first and as a designated hitter, with David Fry’s limitations sparking interest in free agents like Ty France, Alec Bohm, or Ryan Mountcastle—or a trade target such as Spencer Steer. Meanwhile, second baseman Travis Bazzana is expected to refine his offensive contributions while solidifying his defensive improvements after a year of preparation.
